ISLAMABAD: Eye brows were raised across the globe when it was reported that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has ordered cellular operators to terminate all kinds of SMS and voice bundles on moral grounds only.

Mobile phone customers who benefit positively from cheap voice and SMS packages were taken by surprise. Many of them believed that government has taken this decision only to enhance revenues from the telecom sector.Taxes on mobile phone calls and recharges contributes significantly to national exchequer. After days of confused discussions especially on social media, PTA has finally issued a clarification in this regard. In a letter issued on Monday bearing signature of Khurram Mehran, Director Public Relations, PTA has clarified that letter issued on 29th August 2013 is merely a follow-up of similar letter issued on 14th November 2012.

Regulator further clarified that the latest letter has asked cellular service providers to terminate all such services where customers’ can remain anonymous while communicating with other subscribers.

PTA clarified that there will be absolutely no ban on any other packages including SMS and call bundles. Unlike previous orders, cellular operators have agreed to comply.
